CATE Help Menu for Faculty
This is the Help Menu for faculty who are building and maintaining their own online academic materials using SRJC's CATE system, the Computer-Assisted Teaching Environment. The same Help pages can be accessed via context-sensitive links within the CATE system.
CATE accounts are provided by the Distance Education office to permit SRJC faculty to quickly and easily create online support and information services for classes and other academic programs at SRJC: academic homepages for faculty, online tests and exercises, course homepages, online lecture notes, etc. The system requires no knowledge of HTML (HyperText Markup Language) or CGI (Common Gateway Interface-- Net-based programming/scripting). Anyone with Web access and a CATE account can immediately begin to create a wide range of customized materials.
Today
The time between 5:00 PM and 8:00 PM Pacific Time on Friday is reserved for system maintenance on the Distance Education server. CATE, Moodle, and all other services
on the DE server can be completely unavailable during maintenance. Please plan your work so as to avoid any possible disruption during this period.
15 May 2013
The schedule of classes for fall was permatized this morning, and you can now create CATE section homepages for that semester.
26 April 2013
For sections using the CATE Gradebook module, we've now added options to allow the instructor to view the gradebook and see exactly what any individual student sees when he or she logs into the gradebook in the normal fashion. On the main page for each section in the Student Rosters module and the Gradebook module you'll now find a "View Grades" button for each student on file. Clicking that button will open a new window or tab and show you exactly what that student sees in the gradebook. This option is not for editing; it's just for viewing. Entering and editing grades is still done as usual.
16 April 2013
In general, students should always be required to submit "online assignments" to the gradebook via the corresponding quiz/test/exam created in the Test & Exercise module.
However, should it become necessary (and if you will allow it), you can now create a blank record for any student for any online assignment in order to manually enter score, comments, etc.
See our gradebook documentation for details.
3 April 2013
In order to remind instructors using the CATE Message Console that private messages sent to students do NOT ever go out as email,
a new red icon now appears in the Console whenever the "private" option is selected.
26 March 2013
Would you like to use a Voki (or a similar educational resource) on your CATE pages? It's very easy to do so. For instructions,
see our Voki help document.
6 March 2013
The instructor for a section now has the ability to designate someone as the reader/grader to handle gradebook chores for that class.
See the Help document for complete details about designating and using a reader/grader.
8 January 2013
Beginning today, the system will automatically remind instructors if they have one or more CATE rosters with overdue maintenance,
and it will be necessary to purge such rosters for old sections before new sections can be created. Please see
How to...Purge Students for details.
24 August 2012
As a result of changes to CATE's underlying security system implemented over the summer, it is no longer possible for instructors to see student usernames or passwords.
As always, however, it has never been necessary (although it was possible) for instructors to access those usernames and passwords.
If the student needs assistance with username and/or password, these two resources remain available, and should resolve all issues:
The Student Reminder page will send an email with information and instructions to the student: http://online.santarosa.edu/cgi-bin/autocate/student/reminder.cgi
The Student Configuration Manager will allow the student to see and/or edit username and password, even if the student doesn't know his or her username and password: https://online.santarosa.edu/cgi-bin/autocate/student/student.cgi
Please note, by the way, that the system will show you the username and password for any "practice student" you use in your class.
13 August 2012
We've completed today's work on the server. Please remember that your CATE password is case-sensitive. Password is not the same as password which is not the same as PASSWORD. Because of today's changes, careful attention to this case-sensitivity will be more important than ever for you and your students.
