Instructor Development Santa Rosa Junior College 2000

Ethics and Leadership in Public Safety

Many years of experience in the fire service

Academic Experience

I have been teaching at the Fire Academy since my retirement in 1999. The modules I have been teaching have been:

    Ethics in the Fire Service
    Fire Protection and Alarm Systems
    Fire Behavior

Also, I am an historian and a curator of a military history museum for many years.

Work and Consulting Experience

I have been a Firefighter from 1979 to 1999. The range of experience is from a Volunteer, Seasonal Wild land Firefighter, and Full time Municipal Firefghter. I have trained Volunteers and new Firefighters through out my career. I was a Master Breathing Apparatus Repair Technician. With my science background, I am bringing some basic chemistry and physics to the field of firefighting in a non- intimidating way. The "way" to make this happen is the use of; visual table top, field demonstrations, and experiences.

Professional Areas of Interest

I feel it is most important to pass on the "knowledge of experience" to the up and coming generations of firefighters. I credit this "knowledge" with saving my life in the field. So I am here as a Fire Service Instructor to maintain this tradition of "knowledge transfer". Also, since I have been teaching courses on fire behavior, I have kept up on the latest scientific information on the subject fire behavior as it relates to the firefighter in the field. I am currently working with others in the field on some scale modeling experiments. Also, I am looking at data from actual incidents ranging from wild land, structural, and fire involving many types of hazardous materials.

Professional Involvement and Community Service

I am always taking courses and updates as a tool to make me a better instructor in Public Safety . I learn from my students, as I hope they, learn from me by using feedback.

I am active in my Jewish Community and the community in large in the promoting of "Tikkun Olam" or the repairing of the world. This involves simple acts of kindness to fellow humans to rendering aid to people who need assistance in getting their lives back on track. Also, I work in promoting respect with the community as a whole.
