Biography

    Joe Perea is the new Director of Bands at Santa Rosa Junior College. He joins us after 6 years as Director of Instrumental Music and music department head of Richland College in Dallas, TX. Joe holds degrees in Percussion Performance from the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and the University of North Texas. He has studied wind conducting with Eugene Corporon and marimba performance with Leigh Howard Stevens. He has performed in numerous symphony orchestras around the country, as well as with the Dallas Wind Symphony under the batons of Jerry Junkin and Frederick Fennell. He has appeared on recordings of the Cincinnati and North Texas Wind Symphonies under the Klavier label as well as the top-selling GIA Publications series, Teaching Music Through Performance in Band.
    Joe is also performer, arranger, and scholar on Caribbean steel drum instruments and is one of fewer than 100 people living in the United States who build and tune these instruments. In this artform, he has performed with many of the top artists including Darren Dyke, Ray Holman, Tom Miller, Andy Narell, Ken "Professor" Philmore, Len "Boogsie" Sharpe, and many others.

    I am a builder and tuner of Caribbean steel pan instruments. I also compose and arrange music for that medium.
