Moodle Profile

"Limits, like fears, are often just an illusion." Michael Jordan

I'm honored to be part of this outstanding SRJC community for my 16th year, and look forward to meeting all of you. In Fall 2013 I'm teaching two sections of English 100. Here are some things you should know about my classes:

We will be looking at important issues in contemporary culture, and how each of us forges an identity both as an individual, and as part of various communities. Some of these issues include family, ethnicity, gender, media, advertising and education.

I'm excited about the learning process, and expect you to be, too. Strive to be an active, engaged learner and set high expectations for yourself. These are key components to having a successful semester in just about any college-level class. You can expect me to do my best to facilitate the learning process, but you have to be part of the process by participating in the classroom community. Visit me in my office early and often, with any questions, concerns, to talk about the class, or just to say hello.

I've listed the textbook and one novel for Fall 2013. I post it here so you can get an early start and purchase them ahead of time in the most convenient way for you, at the best price. (SRJC Bookstore or online sites, and textbook rentals are some options.) If you plan to order online, do so soon--as they can take quite some time to ship. Just a note: textbooks are required for my courses. Make sure to purchase the correct edition, as listed.

Biography

I grew up in a working-class family on the East Coast and I am originally a "Jersey Girl." I'm also a first generation college-student, my mother having dropped out of high school when she was sixteen to work and support her family. During a sometimes tumultuous childhood, I found refuge and escape inside the pages of my favorite books, often old classics I would find at my Grandmother's house, like Little Women. I soon became a regular at the local library and spent many hours pouring over the shelves in the children's section. Folklore and mythology were some of my favorite tales--stories of places both exotic and far away.

Despite my working class roots and my food stamp past, I knew that college meant opportunity. Even though I didn't have any role models of how to succeed in college growing up, on campus I found mentors (usually favorite professors) who were able to show me a road map to academic success. From them, I found support and validation to explore my love of books, and the power that writing held to free and transform us.

Maybe because of all those books filled with far away places, I left the East Coast 20 years ago for a place about as far away from my home as you can get and still be in the transcontinental USA. I came to California in the late 80's, with just my suitcase and a desire to see and experience something new. I fell in love with the Northern California landscape and beaches and now consider myself a native. I've been teaching part-time at SRJC since 1996. I feel like the students here are a reflection of the journey I began all those years ago in the pages of a book, and one that continues even now. I learn from my students every day. I relish your optimism and believe in your power to make a difference.
