Self-Assessment Quiz

Important Considerations:

A student's motivation for taking Distance Learning classes is key. Highly motivated students, for career goals, etc., are most likely to succeed.

If a student views Distance Learning as an easy way out of hard work, s/he is totally misinformed and misguided.

Some students prefer the independence of Distance Learning; others find the independence uncomfortable and miss being part of the classroom experience.

Distance Learning courses give students greater freedom of scheduling, but they can require more self-discipline than on-campus classes.

Distance Learning requires at least as much time as on-campus courses. Distance Learning courses, it is said, are as hard or harder than on campus courses.

Most people who are successful with Distance Learning find it difficult to come to campus on a regular basis because of their work/family/personal schedules.

Students who do well in Distance Learning courses are usually comfortable contacting the instructor as soon as they need help with the course.

Biography

From 1997 until retirement in 2004 I was a full-time instructor in the SRJC Administration of Justice Department. I now teach online classes as an adjunct faculty member.

Prior to my appointment at SRJC I was a Lecturer in Public Administration (Graduate Studies) at Golden Gate University, San Francisco and a consultant at the Modesto Regional Criminal Justice Training Center.

In 1997, having worked full-time in the criminal justice system for more than twenty five years, I retired from the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts. By that time I had worked as U.S. Probation Officer for more than 23 years. During my years with U.S. Probation I functioned as a line officer, as a drug and alcohol abuse contract and treatment specialist, as an officer-in-charge, and finally as a supervisor and manager of the Santa Rosa and San Rafael offices. In addition, during this federal employment, I was a faculty member of the Federal Judicial Center, Washington D.C., the training arm of the Federal Court System. Prior to the federal position, I worked as a rehabilitation/social services officer in the San Francisco and Alameda County jail facilities.

Parallel to my career I was participating in community service over the years. I was an elected school board member and President of the Old Adobe Union School District, Petaluma. In addition, I had the privilege and fun of coaching sports, including baseball and soccer.

Teaching online classes is a fulfilling experience and I enjoy my continued work with students.
