Biography

    Pete has received extensive private trumpet instruction from: internationally recognized Yamaha Trumpet Artist and Clinician Bobby Shew (H. Silver, B. Rich, T. Akioshi, L. Academic Experience

    As an Adjunct Instructor at Sonoma State University (since 1999), Pete has taught Beginning Jazz Improvisation, Jazz History, Contemporary Jazz Ensembles, and Studio Trumpet. As an Adjunct Jazz Instructor at Santa Rosa Junior College (since 1996) he has taught Beginning Jazz Improvisation and Jazz Appreciation. As a Guest Lecturer at SSU and SRJC, Pete has taught (SSU) classes in Jazz Composition, History of American Music, Brass Ensemble and Big-Band, as well as (SRJC) classes in, Jazz Combos, Jazz-Pop Theory, Intermediate Improvisation and Big-Band. He has been active in both Northern and Southern California as a Jazz, Brass, and Trumpet Clinician and Private Teacher for 29 years.

Work and Consulting Experience

    In addition to appearing regularly in a variety of settings which include orchestral, opera, theater, dance and brass groups, Pete also leads his own Jazz Quintet (The Blue Note Collective). He has appeared on 4 albums including former Sonoma State University Jazz Department Head Mel Graves' "Ear Shot" and a release by Jazz Vocalist/Teacher Bonnie Brooks (TBA)(both featuring the Sonoma State University Jazz Faculty). For the past 26 years, Pete has been the Racetrack Bugler on the Northern California Fair Circuit, performing each summer at the Alameda, Humboldt, Sonoma, Solano, San Joaquin, and Sacramento State Fairs. He has also worked for Holland America, Princess and Carnival Cruise Lines as a featured soloist and lead player. Pete has performed with, and arranged for, Ensembles featuring such well-known jazz artists as Bobby Shew, Charlie Haden, James Newton, Red Calendar, Bruce Forman, Tom Scott, Carl Fontana, Joe Williams, Albert Heath, Ernie Watts, and Roscoe Mitchell.

Presentations and Publications

    Pete has authored 15 books resulting from the work of transcribing of over 400 jazz trumpet solos. Pete's transcriptions were included on the bonus disk of the 2006 Concord Music Group re-release of the Miles Davis (late 50's) Prestige recording sessions. Additionally, he has transcribed over 200 original jazz compositions and arrangements by the Blue Note Masters. Under the guidance of James Newton (Downbeat Poll Winner-Jazz Flute), Pete also transcribed and arranged portions of Duke Ellington's "Queen's Suite". This work was performed by the Danish National Radio Orchestra in 1991.
