Biography

    Peggy Walsh Goebel has taught and practiced nursing since 1971. She is currently serving as the Director of the Vocational Nursing Program. She has taught RN and VN nursing at SRJC since 1976 and has taught a summer class in the Master's in Nursing Program on culture and health care for Dominican University since 2000.

    Peggy was born, raised and educated in San Francisco, she is a Northern California native! Peggy has two grown children, Cindy, married to Ron, and Jeff. She has two grandchildren Charley Jack born 11/24/08 and she is just thrilled about him!Cali Nicolene born 4/20/11.

    Peggy received her BS in Nursing and Public Health Nursing Certificate from the University of San Francisco. She earned a school health nursing certificate, her MSN in nursing with a focus in both maternal and pediatric nursing from UCSF and her doctorate from UCSF. Her Doctoral focus was in the area of Maternal and Family Nursing. Her research was on Paternal Touch and Outcomes for the Low Birthweight Preterm infant. She served as a Research Assistant for 5 years while in graduate school on a National Institute of Health Grant with Dr. Sandra Weiss, on Caregiver Touch and Outcomes of Low Birthweight Infants from which her doctorate work is based. She has an early childhood education credential and taught for 2 years for the San Francisco Unified School District in their early childhood development program. Peggy has designed and taught Spanish Immersion Health Care and Language Programs for both SRJC and Dominican University in Ensenada Mexico

    Peggy is bilingual and bicultural in Spanish. She lived and worked as a peace corps volunteer in rural Honduras, Central America. Her work in Honduras included: running a rural health clinic, Public Health Outreach work, designing, teaching and supervising a Rural Health Promotor Program and disaster relief health care management. She coordinated international relief efforts after Hurricane FIFI, which included flying in dozens of helicopter evacuation missions and coordinating international relief team efforts. She returned to Honduras with her grown children to do disaster relief work after Hurricane Mitch. She is an active member on the US Peace Corps Crisis Corps and a trained Red Cross Disaster Relief Nurse. While on Sabbatical, in the summer of 2007 and 2009, Peggy worked as a nurse for Project HOPE aboard the USNS Comfort on a Presidential Humanitarian Health Care Mission to Latin America. She worked with Project HOPE in a trip to Vietnam and Cambodia in the summer of 2010. She enjoys providing much needed nursing care to those less fortunate. She hopes to join another Project HOPE mission to Africa.

    Peggy has worked clinically in many areas and levels of health care. She has worked as an RN in the acute care setting in the areas of maternal child, labor and delivery, medical surgical nursing, and intensive care nursing. She worked in public health, maternal child health, rural clinic and disaster health care in Honduras.

    Peggy's health care teaching experience started in the US Peace Corps, teaching semi-literature rural village women to return to their villages as basic health care providers. She wrote a grant and obtained funding from Spain to sponsor this as an ongoing program in Honduras. While in graduate school at UCSF, she taught as a clinical instructor in the BS Nursing program. She has taught both maternal child and medical surgical nursing at SRJC in the RN and VN programs since 1976. Peggy has served as past Assistant Director of the ADN Program for over 15 years and RN 2nd year course coordinator.

    Peggy's SRJC college service includes current membership and participation on the: Academic Senate,the Faculty Recognition Committee, The District Institutional Planning Counsel, and past participation in the District Budget Advisory, All Faculty Association, Health Services Advisory, Faculty Technology Committee, SRJC accreditation committees, Faculty Professional Staff Development committee and the Staff Development Committee.
