Distance Ed Moodle information for faculty

Santa Rosa Junior College's Distance Education office officially opened a Moodle installation for Web-based teaching and learning beginning with the Fall 2011 semester.

Moodle and the existing CATE courseware management system will run in parallel, and faculty will be able to use either, or both, as they see fit for online classes and Web-based enhancements to face-to-face classes.

The Distance Education Moodle is located at this URL: http://online.santarosa.edu/moodle.

The exact same Moodle site can also be accessed via this alternative URL: http://moodle.santarosa.edu.

Getting a Moodle account

If you have a Distance Ed account (aka DE CMS account, or CATE account), you already have a Moodle account. If you request and receive a Distance Ed account, you will automatically receive a Moodle account.

As soon as you have an account, you can create a Moodle course for any section(s) you are officially scheduled to teach at SRJC.

If you have a question about obtaining or accessing a Moodle account, please contact Bill Stone.

For information about the process for creating a Moodle course, see this Help document.

Getting training

For information about training opportunities, please see our Moodle training page or contact Lisa Beach in the Distance Education office.

Important Note: The Distance Ed server is running Moodle 2.x, so you'll want to ensure you're trained on that version, not 1.x.

Getting support

Do you have questions about how to perform specific tasks in Moodle?

Our Moodle Help Menu contains links to many useful "how to" files and other helpful documents.

Our Moodle is very much a faculty-driven, faculty-supported system, so you should normally ask (and answer) questions about using Moodle in the Faculty Forum on SRJC's Distance Education server.

For information about getting a Moodle account, creating a Moodle course, populating Moodle rosters, and other issues involving SRJC - Distance Ed - CATE - Moodle integration, please contact Bill Stone.

For information about building Moodle courses, customizing them, and using them to teach classes at SRJC, please contact Lisa Beach.

In addition, to take advantage of the expertise of the worldwide community of Moodle users, you can always participate in the forums at moodle.org: Moodle community forums

Moodle support for students

Distance Ed offers a full suite of help documentation for students using Moodle, all available via our Moodle Help Menu for Students. Students who need further assistance with Moodle-based classes should always turn first to their instructors.

Students with questions concerning how to get an SRJC email account, how to register for an online class, where online class websites are located, and how to access the correct online class can also contact the Student Help Desk.

Server Down Time

Our Moodle site runs on the Distance Education server, and it's affected by exactly the same down time and outages as the server as a whole. Please see information under the "Server Down Time" and "Message of the Day" headings on the Distance Education homepage for full information about periods when Moodle will be unavailable.
