All my Econ classes

Welcome

Welcome to the economics program at Santa Rosa Junior College. All SRJC economics courses transfer to the University of California (UC), and California State University (CSU) systems. The primary difference between SRJC courses and four-year college courses at the freshman/sophomore level is the cost of the course ($624 per year at SRJC for 12 units v $11220 per year at CAL), and the number of students in the classroom (35 - 45 at SRJC v 300 - 900 at CAL). http://registrar.berkeley.edu/Registration/feesched.html

For international students, the difference in costs is $5800 per year at SRJC v $35340 per year at CAL.

Comparisons to Sonoma State and other CSU's show similar tuition differentials compared to community colleges
http://www.sonoma.edu/registration/fees

Here state comparisons for public 2 year college tuitions and mandatory fees - http://www.schev.edu/Reportstats/2011TuitionFeesReport.pdf?from= [look for Table E-3 which is the last page]

The mathematics prerequisite for both Economics 1 (Macro), and Economics 2 (Micro) is successful completion of Math 155 or eligibility for any SRJC math course numbered 1 - 99.

I am the instructor for this course as opposed to someone famous. I write and grade your exams. There are no graduate student instructors (GSI). You will complete the same level of college work in this course that students complete at the University of California. Homework is assigned every day, and all homework assignments require math applications. Homework assignments are reviewed every lecture.

Late homework assignments are never accepted.

Please do not send homework assignments via e-mail.

You should plan to devote six hours per week to homework.

It is your responsibility to get the material if you miss or arrive late to a class. The reason for the absence is irrelevant. There are no excused or unexcused absences (College Catalog page 22 section 3.1). There are just absences.

It is your responsibility to arrive to class on time.

Please do not ask me to repeat information that youu missed because you arrived late to class or missed class.

If you miss a class, try to attend a different section. You are welcome to attend as many sections as necessary, but the bottom line is that it is your responsibility to get the information that you missed.

Absence from class is not an excuse for failing to complete the required assignments(see syllabus links).

Get the phone numbers or e-mail addresses of one or two students in the class, so that you may contact them should you miss a lecture or need information regarding upcoming quizzes or exams.

PLEASE DO NOT CONTACT ME FOR INFORMATION REGARDING THE LECTURE THAT YOU MISSED! I do not give personalized lectures for students who miss
class.

I try to give exams on Wednesday or Thursday, but there are times when the exam is given on a Monday or Tuesday. Exams are always announced a week in advance to give students time to study and prepare. If you do not not understand the material, please come see me as soon as possible. Do not procrastinate! If you need help, see me right
away!

e-mail communications: I maintain 9 - 12 office hours per week. Please come see me during those hours. There is no limit to the number of times that you may come to my office. There is no limit to the number of questions that you may ask to help you understand he material. However, once I leave my office for the day, I'm done answering questions. Please get the email addresses of other students in your class so that you have someone with whom to study and to make the course more fun. I will try to respond to e-mail questions within 48 hrs.

"Students with disabilities who believe they may need accommodations in this class are encouraged to contact Disability Resources(527-4278), Analy Village - C, as soon as possible to better ensure such accommodations are implemented in a timely fashion."

Feel free to contact me should you ever have questions.

SRJC Attendance Policy

Students are expected to arrive to class on time. It is both rude and disruptive to the class when a student arrives late. I understand that sometimes it is difficult to get to class on time, but there is a limit to tardiness. I will deduct five points (5 points) from a student's grade every time a student arrives to class 5 minutes after the class begins. After the fourth tardy, the student will not be permitted to attend the lecture if he/she is late.

Students who regularly miss class have a very low probability of passing the course. Santa Rosa Junior College attendance policy is described on page 21 section 2.1 of the College Catalog. For clarification purposes, a student may be dropped from a course if the student misses 10% of the course. Since this course has 30 class meetings, students are permitted to miss a maximum of 3 class meetings. I will drop any student who misses the fourth meeting of the class as per the State of California Education Code cited in the catalog.

Attendance Requirements (SRJC College Catalog page 21)
It shall be the policy of the Sonoma County Junior
College District to maintain an attendance policy
and procedures consistent with State and local
requirements.
1.0 Attendance
1.1 Students are expected to attend all sessions
of the course in which they are enrolled.
1.2 Any student with excessive absences may be
dropped from the class.
2.0 Excessive Absence Defined
2.1 A student may be dropped from any class
when that student’s absences exceed ten percent
(10%) of the total hours of class time.
2.2 Instructors shall state in each course syllabus
what constitutes excessive absence for that
course.
3.0 Excused vs. Unexcused absences
3.1 Unless state or federal law requires that the
absence be deemed excused, no instructor
shall be required to make a distinction between
excused and unexcused absences.
3.2 If individual Instructors wish to distinguish
between excused and unexcused absences
the instructor shall state in each course syllabus
all criteria for any excused absences in
addition to those required by state or federal
law.
4.0 Nonattendance
4.1 Students who fail to attend the first two class
meetings of a full semester course, or the first
class meeting for classes that meet once a
week, may be dropped by the instructor.
4.2 Faculty are required to drop all No-Show
students by the Census Date of each census
course. A No-Show is an enrolled student
who has not attended any class meeting of
the course at any time, or who has not contacted
the instructor to make arrangements
to remain enrolled in the course.

Please be on time!

SRJC College Catalog - Academic Integrity - page 20

Academic Integrity

Santa Rosa Junior College holds that its primary
function is the development of intellectual curiosity,
integrity, and accomplishment in an atmosphere
that upholds the principles of academic freedom.
All members of the academic community—
student, faculty, staff, and administrator—must
assume responsibility for providing an environment
of the highest standards characterized by
a spirit of academic honesty and mutual respect.
Because personal accountability is inherent in an
academic community of integrity, this institution
will not tolerate or ignore any form of academic
dishonesty.
Academic dishonesty is regarded as any act of
deception, benign or malicious in nature, in the
completion of any academic exercise. Examples of
academic dishonesty include cheating, plagiarism,
impersonation, misrepresentation of idea or fact
for the purpose of defrauding, use of unauthorized
aids or devices, falsifying attendance records,
violation of testing protocol, inappropriate course
assignment collaboration, and any other acts that
are prohibited by the instructor of record.
E.C. 66300-01, 76030-37; Policy 3.11 May 2001
Faculty and students are partners in maintaining
the College’s academic integrity, in accordance
with the guidelines delineated below.

Tutors

There currently are no econ tutors available.

Tutors are available in the tutorial center free of charge. You need to make an appointment for tutoring assistance. Please go over to the tutorial center and sign-up to see the tutor if you are having any difficulties with the material.

The economics tutors are full-time SRJC students. Like all students, they have classes to attend, and homework assignments to complete. The tutors are not there for your convenience, and are not available 24/7. They cannot help you if you miss class. Please make appointments to see them before you start to get very lost with the material.

Letters of recommendation

A minimum grade of "A" in the course is necessary to receive a letter of recommendation. Although an "A" is required, it is not sufficient.

I also consider class participation, attendance, and overall attitude.
