The below is provided as a guideline, is not necessarily all inclusive, and is subject to change. It is important to adhere to the reading assignments and other assignments, as listed in the schedule. Please also note the required completion dates for quizzes and tests, etc. The following is the required text: 1. Criminal Justice in America, 6th Edition: George F. Cole and Christopher E. Smith. For reading assignments this will be referenced as "CJA".

| Week 1 |
January 14 |
During this first week, introduce yourself to the class by sending some brief information about yourself to the class Message Board. Introductions might include your work experience, educational goals, why you are taking this class, what you do for fun, etc. Assignments: Read the following: CJA text, Chapter 1; and lecture material (see link at right) for this unit. Submit a post to the Message Board. Participate in class discussion through the Message Board. Please note that posts should be submitted according to the weekly schedule. | Informational Interview |
March 28 |
An informational interview is required to be submitted by March 28. However, a court visit may be substituted instead. Reports may be submitted early. For more on the informational interview, please click on the link at right. More information on court visits is provided below. If a student is unable to accomplish either of these projects because of work, etc., the student must complete an alternative project or projects. The student may make suggestions, to be approved beforehand by the instructor. Alternatives could include a ride-along, a book report, or a visit to a community agency related to the criminal justice field, such as a drug treatment program or a mental health treatment facility. |
Informational Interview |

March 28 |
As noted above, a court visit report may be submitted in place of the informational interview report. The court visit should be to a criminal court (NOT CIVIL) and should be for a minimum of two hours. The two hours do not have to be completed on the same day. For more information click on the Court Visit Form link. Also, to find information regarding court dates in Sonoma county, click on the link for Sonoma Superior Court. If you live in a county other than Sonoma, you may visit a court in your county. |

The midterm examination will be conducted online and it will be available for "loading" on your computer on March 9 or 10, Saturday or Sunday. You may take the exam at any time during one of those two days. However, you will only be allowed to "load" the exam ONCE, and your completed exam must be submitted within 70 minutes of the time it was "loaded". If for some good reason (such as some disability issue) you feel you need more time, approval must be obtained from the instructor at least three days prior to the final. Efforts will be made to verify the authenticity of the exam, such as: the questions will be randomly chosen from a bank of questions, answers will also be presented in random sequence, and there is the ability to inspect submissions for unusual activity, etc. This exam is CLOSED BOOK, NOTES ARE NOT ALLOWED, NO VISITING LECTURE PRESENTATION PAGES OR THE GRADE BOOK WHILE THE TEST IS LOADED, NO HELP FROM OTHERS, AND NO PRINTING OF THE EXAM.
