\Getting Started\ In order to take any class at Santa Rosa Junior College, students must go through all the appropriate administrative steps. Students taking online classes (and some face-to-face classes utilizing Web-based resources), usually must take the additional step of going through the class check-in process.

A. Getting started

CATE, the Center for Advanced Technology in Education at SRJC, hosts Santa Rosa Junior College's online classes as well as Web-based materials created for face-to-face classes by SRJC faculty.

All Santa Rosa Junior College students may take these classes.

If you are not already an SRJC student, you must first apply for admission to the college. After you have been admitted to SRJC, then you must officially register for the course through the Admissions and Records Department. Read the Getting Started page for more information on eligibility, registration, fees, etc.

If you are taking an online class—and, in some cases, if you're taking a face-to-face class for which the instructor has provided mandatory or optional Web-based materials—then you will usually need to take the additional step of checking into the class when it starts so that your instructor knows you are ready and able to participate.

Most instructors won't allow you to check into the class until the date it actually begins. Review the requirements of your specific class to see which, if any, of the following procedures is required:

  • Most online classes require you to complete and submit an online check-in form before you can begin the class
  • In some classes, the instructor will automatically place you on the CATE roster so it is not necessary to go through the check-in process
  • A few classes require you to use their own special check-in process
  • Other classes only require you to check in with the instructor via email
  • If your class has no Web-based components, then you shouldn't need to check in at all (and you can skip this entire Handbook)

Study the requirements of your specific class to see what, if any, check-in process is required. If you have any question about which procedure to use, consult with your instructor.

For more information about the CATE check-in process, see Chapter 7 of this Handbook.

C. Self-assessment

Take the self-assessment quiz to ensure you're comfortable with all the concepts and skills in this chapter. The quiz will open in a new browser window, and after submitting the quiz you'll immediately see your score.

Practice exercise: Make sure you've enrolled at SRJC and registered for your online class!
